Mastectomy Fittings
Things to Note From a Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF):
The 6–8 Week Rule: You should wait until 6 to 8 weeks after surgery before getting fitted for a permanent silicone prosthesis. This allows swelling to subside and incisions to heal completely.
Post-Radiation: If you are undergoing radiation, your skin may be extra sensitive. You may need to wait longer or use a lightweight fabric form until the skin settles.
Temporary "Puff"
Best for immediate post-op
These are very light and doesn't irritate your incisions.
Silicone
Best for permanent daily wear.
Silicone forms mimic the weight and movement of a natural breast.
Fiberfill/Foam
Best for sleeping or lounging.
Fiberfill/Foam forms are cooler and lighter than silicone, however, they are less natural looking.
Swim
Best for the pool or ocean.
Swim forms are water-resistant and won't get waterlogged like standard forms.
Partial/Shaper
Best for lumpectomies.
Partial/Shaper forms fill in specific areas to restore symmetry.
What to wear to the fitting?
Wear a fitted, light-coloured t-shirt. This helps your fitter see the silhouette and ensures your form looks natural under your clothes.
